About the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the U.S. Code database
Notes Provided by the Access GPO Web site, this is the official
condification of U.S. laws (statutes).

After a bill becomes law (Public Law), it is cumulated into
United States Statutes at Large. It is later codified into the United States
Code, which is re-codified every six years, with annual supplements in other
years. When searching, be sure to enclose phrases in "quotation marks".
The United States Code

After a Public Law is published in Statutes at Large, it is codified and
integrated into the UNITED STATES CODE (U.S.C.). The U.S.C. is divided into
fifty Titles based on subject matter. Each Public Law will be assigned to the
Title to which it pertains; if a Public Law contains provisions about more
than one subject, it will be divided among multiple Titles.

The U.S.C. is the official version of the federal statutes, but there are two
privately published versions, the United States Code Annotated (U.S.C.A.)
and the United Stated Code Service (U.S.C.S). These versions of the code
include the same text as the official U.S.C., with case citations and
annotations added. They are also published more quickly than the U.S.C.,
hence they are more likely to be up to date.

Statutes in the U.S.C. can usually be located with the alphabetical index at
the end of the set, or with the popular name table (useful for finding
statutes commonly referred to by name, such as the Freedom of
Information Act).
